1st Training School

"Material preparation (boards and solid wood) for Material Surface Modification using Chemical and Thermal Treatments"

08-09 March 2012, University of Ljubljana, Biotechnical Faculty, Department of Wood Science and Technology, Ljubljana, Slovenia

The aim of the Training School (TS) is to provide knowledge on the importance of good surface preparation and modification for the final surface quality and particularly aim to attract early stage resarchers. The topics presented at this TS are in the frame of the Action activities and will provide an intensive training on sample preparation (boards and solid wood), surface preparation, surface modification and analytical testing methods as well as practice on laboratory equipments (production of plywood, production of particleboard, surface modification treatments (chemical and thermal), FTIR spectroscopy).

The TS duration is 2 days (08-09 March 2012). Participants will gain knowledge in the field of wood surface modification thanks to an alternation of theoretical and practical sessions. The participants will be trained during theoretical as well as practical courses on selected topics from the following fields:
- Surface adhesion properties
- Experimental analysis applied to the modified materials
- Surface activation techniques, surface modification and its impact on surface activation
- Thermal and chemical modification using different treatments

The theoretical as well as practical parts will take place at the lecture rooms and labratories of the University of Ljubljana, Biotechnical Faculty, Department of Wood Science and Technology in Ljubljana. The following work plan will be followed:

Day one – 08 March 2012:
- Importance of good surface preparation for quality surfacing with liquid coating systems and different surfacing materials like laminate, melamine impregnated paper, thermoplastic foil etc
- Production and preparation of solid wood and wood based panels with practical work

Day two – 09 March 2012:
- Adhesion properties of surface (adhesive and liquid coatings) with practical work
- Surface activation techniques
- Surface modification and impact on surface activation with practical work
- Surfacing techniques with practical work

Practical work:
Production of plywood
- thermal heating press
- high frequency press
Production of particleboard
- lower, normal and high temperature pressing
Sanding
- Surface modification treatment (chemical and thermal)
- Surfacing and coating of wood and wood based panels
Analysis of surface
- pH value
- buffering capacity
- wetting of surface
- surface absorption
- FTIR spectroscopy
